Average-speed cameras measure a section, not a single moment

The system compares observations at separated points and uses elapsed time over a known distance to calculate average speed.

The basic calculation

When the same vehicle is identified at two approved observation points, distance divided by travel time gives an average speed for the stretch between them. That is the whole mechanism. There is no instantaneous measurement to catch and no single moment that decides the outcome.

Additional cameras along a route can create several consecutive controlled sections, each assessed on its own. The exact identification method, the evidence retained and the enforcement procedure depend on the installed system and the authority operating it.

Why this changes the driving problem

A point camera rewards a driver who knows where it is. A section camera does not, because there is no point to slow for. What matters is the speed held across the whole distance, which makes the correct technique identical to the technique that was always correct: drive at the limit.

The practical consequence is that the familiar approach-and-accelerate pattern is not just useless here, it is counterproductive. Braking sharply at each camera while travelling faster in between produces the same average as steady driving, with worse consequences for everyone behind.

What people assume, and should not

Roadworks and temporary limits

Average-speed systems are widely used through roadworks, where a lower temporary limit applies over a defined length. Two things follow. The temporary limit is the limit — a permanent limit signed before the works has no bearing inside them. And the section can be long: several miles of contraflow assessed as one stretch is normal, so the discipline has to last the whole way rather than through the part with cones beside it.

Temporary layouts also change between visits. A route driven last month may have a different limit, a different section length or no system at all today, which is a good reason to read signs rather than rely on memory or on any stored dataset.

Common questions

Does changing lanes reset an average-speed camera?

Do not assume that it does. Systems are commonly designed to match a vehicle across the full width of the carriageway, and lane discipline is not a reliable way to affect a measurement taken over distance.

Does stopping for fuel help?

Time spent stopped inside a controlled section is time in the section. Stopping raises the elapsed time and therefore lowers the calculated average, but it is not a technique — it is a side effect of a genuine stop.

Is braking at the camera useful?

No. The average is calculated across the whole section, so a moment of low speed beside a camera has almost no effect on it, while the sudden change in speed does affect the traffic behind you.
